Biography of Adelaide Pilgrem collected by the ACWS. Adelaide Pilgrem was brutally murdered by her ex-husband, Wilfred, on May 15, 1983. Adelaide, Wilfred and their 9 children lived in Hampton, Newfoundland. She endured 25 years of severe abuse and attempted numerous times to leave him. For her own safety, she fled Newfoundland and came to Fort McMurray in 1982. Wilfred followed Adelaide to Alberta. He began stalking her and she was forced to stay in a shelter a lot of this time. Adelaide's divorce from Wilfred was finalized on May 15, 1983. This same day she celebrated her new found independence, Wilfred found her and brutally bludgeoned her to death with a hatchet. Wilfred received 25 years without the possibility of parole. However, he was granted parole in 2004, serving 21 years in prison for the murder of his wife. Adelaide will always be remembered as kind and giving, and for her love of her children. She loved animals and was a Salvation Army soldier until she married Wilfred.
